Charlie, a tramp in love with the owner's daughter, is grabbed by the captain and promises to help him shanghai some seamen. The daughter stows away to follow Charlie. Charlie assists in the galley and attempts to serve food during a gale.。第二次世界大战初期，德国法西斯发动了侵波战争，战火弥漫了整个波兰大地，人民生活在水深火热之中，西部地区先后被德军占领。波兰资产阶级政府派军队奋起反抗，但力不胜敌，寡不敌众，军队纷纷被迫宣告解散。当时有一名少校叫做道布然斯基不愿解散，决心抗争到底。他聚集了被解散的一个团的200多名骑兵，继续和德国法西斯英勇战斗。此时，他为了躲避风险，化名为“胡巴尔”，转战于波兰东南部凯尔采地区一带，同德军展开游击战……整部影片叙述的时间跨度从1939.9.23——1940.4.30胡巴尔牺牲为止。。
